Pathankot, a newly formed district of Punjab is located in its northern part. The administrative headquarters located at Pathankot city. Officially, the district was created on 27th July, 2011. Once upon a time there was a state named Audumbra which was situated in between the two great rivers of ancient times as Parushni or Aravati and Vipasa, both of these two rivers are presently known as River Ravi and Beas, consisting with the entire Nurpur Tehsil, Pathankot Tehsil and a large part of the Gurdaspur district with its capital Pratishthan creates the current Pathankot district. Praishthan (the present Pathankot) was most probably one of the oldest sites in the Punjab, advantageously situated on the great commerce route of pre historic period that extended from Patliputra (Patna) of Magadha state to Takshashila and further to the central Asia under the foothills.

Geographically, the district lies at 32.266814°N latitude and 75.643444°E longitude. The district encompasses a geographical area of . The place is located in the foothills of the Sivalik Hills. It shares international boundaries with the Narowal district of Pakistani Punjab. Moreover, it also shares its borders with the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir and districts of Chamba and Kangra of Himachal Pradesh. On the other hand Hoshiarpur district as well shares a boundary with Pathankot in Eastern Punjab. The two most prominent rivers that pass through the district are Beas and Ravi. The climate of the district remains extremely hot in the summer and fairly cold in the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The annual rainfall is 688 mm.
