About South Goa District (Goa)

Historically, the Portuguese established a colony in the place of Goa in the year 1510 and spread over the colony to its current boundaries during the period of 17th and 18th centuries. Then on 19th December, 1961 Goa was annexed by India. Goa and its two other earlier Portuguese enclaves became the union territory of Goa like Daman and Diu. Goa came into existence as a separate district in the year 1965. Finally Goa attained its statehood on 30th May, 1987 whereas Daman and Diu became a separate union territory. Later, Goa was divided into two districts such as North Goa and South Goa.

Vasudev M. Salgaocar was the founder and chairman of the V. M. Salgaocar Group of Companies and the founder of Salgaocar Football Club. Rowllin Borges is an Indian footballer who uses to play for Sporting Goa in the I-League. Alvito Ronaldo Correia D'Cunha is a football player who represented India in the 2002 world cup qualifiers. He plays for East Bengal as a left winger in present. He also played for Salgaocar SC (1998-2002) and Sesa SC (1997-1998).

Geographically, the district has a total area of 1,966 sq km. and occupies the rank 1st in State and 500th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 15°16'N latitude, 74°08'E longitude and 1167 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 66.56% forest area of total geographical area. It is bounded by the district of North Goa to the North, the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state to the East and South, the Arabian Sea in Western Coast. The climate of the district remains hot and humid for most of the year as it is located in the tropical zone. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 3646.3 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 sub-districts, 23 towns and 140 villages. Konkani is the administrative language of the district. The district came into existence on 30th May, 1987 with its administrative headquarters located at Margao at the distance of 35 kms from the state capital.

Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 1,43,728 households with a total population of 6,40,537 comprising 3,22,463 are males and 3,18,074 are females which causing it to rank 2nd in the state and 515th in India. The density of population of the district is 326 (persons per sq km.). The sex ratio is pegged at 986 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 946 (females per 1000 males). The population growth rate in the district during the period 2001 to 2011 was 8.73% including 7.94% were males and 9.55% were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Christian with 53.34% and 36.21% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Konkani and Marathi with 66.44% and 6.45%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 8,611 out of which 4,438 were males and 4,173 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 6,024 out of which 3,477 were males and 2,547 were females.

Economically, the district is dependent on agriculture, tourism and mining mainly. Mineral iron ore is primarily found here. Rice, paddy, maize and pulses are produced here on a large scale. Some other products main products in the region are coconut, cashew-nut, arecanut, mango, jackfruit, banana, pineapple, etc. industrially also the district is quite well developed. Some of its prominent industrial products are pesticides, fertilizers, tyres and tubes, iron ore pellets, footwear, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, sugar, wheat products, steel rolling, fruits and fish canning, cashew-nuts, textiles, brewery products, manufacture of wood, crafts, brass, pottery, handloom, and leather and bamboo crafts, etc.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 87.59% out of which 91.67% are males and 83.47% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 5,02,427 including 2,64,085 are males and 2,38,342 are female. Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Parvatibai Chowgule College, Carmel College for Women, Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, Padre Conceicao College of Engineering (PCCE), Don Bosco College of Engineering, Rosary College of Arts and Commerce, MES College, Shree Mallikarjun College, Shree Katyayani Baneshwar Vidyalaya, etc are some of the most reputed educational institutions in the district.

Nilesh Cabral is the member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the member of the Goa Legislative Assembly. John F. Fernandez belongs to the Indian National Congress. He was the elected member of Rajya Sabha twice i.e. in the year 1987 and in 1993. Avertano Furtado was the Member of Legislative Assembly of Goa in 2012. Mauvin Godinho is the member of Indian National Congress. He is the member of Goa Legislative Assembly.

The district has many historical and religious tourist places which are famous not only within the country but also in the world. Some of the most notable places of interest in the district are Colva Beach, Agonda Beach, Palolem Beach, Shree Mallikarjun Temple, Shree Saunsthan Gokarn Partagali Jeevottam Math Temple, Mormugao Harbour, Kesarval Spring, Natural Harmony and Galleria De Icons. Every year, a huge number of tourists from worldwide visit this places in order to enjoy its mesmerizing natural sceneries.
