About Navsari District (Gujarat)

Navsari district is a district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters located at Navsari city. As per the book named Persian Inscriptions available on the Indian Monuments, the term navsari in the Persian language has two meanings-Nav (nov) means new and sari means sarai or home or town. The Parsis who first came to Navsari in 1142 A.D. was named it as Nag Mandal. As they resided there, they found a remarkable similarity between the atmospheres in Navsari to that of the Sari region in Iran and renamed it as Navsari. There are also some other stories regarding the origin of the name of the place "Navsari". Earlier, the place was known by different names such as Nag Vardhana, Nag Shahi, Nag Sarika, Nag Mandal, Nav Sarika and Nav Sareh. There are also some legends associated with the several names of Navsari likewise in the seventh century, there was a king named Shayashray Shiladitya who ruled over Navsari and he named the place Nag Vardhana in order to pay a tribute to his Guru Nag Vardhana. After some time the name of the place transferred to Nav Sarika which is evidenced by a recovered copper plate dated 669 A.D. In this way legends provide different stories behind the different names of the place. In the beginning of the 14th century, Muslim rule was at the pick point in Gujarat. During the period of Muslim rule the place was popularly known as Nab Sareh. It is believe that as per the Muslim tradition, there were nine "Sarchs" of Muslims in this region and thus the place was named as NavSareh, Nav meaning nine and Sareh meaning Sarchs. Later, the Parsis, migrated from Iran, occupied this area which ended the rule of the Muslim rulers. On 2nd October, 1997 the Navsari district was emerged as a separate district in the map of Gujarat state.

Homai Vyarawalla, famous for her pseudonym "Dalda 13” and India's first woman photo journalist was born on 9th December, 1913 at Navsari city. The Government of India honoured her by the prestigious Padma Vibhushan Award in the year 2011.

Geographically, the district lies at 20°95'N latitude, 72°92'E longitude and 9 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 16.12% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,246 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 24th in the state and 474th in India. It is bounded by Surat district on the north, Valsad district on the south, Dang district on the east and Arabian Sea on the west. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1915.7 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 taluks namely Chikhli, Gandeva, Jamalpore, Navsari and Vanzna. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 7 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 13 towns and 372 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 13,29,672 out of which 6,78,165 are males and 6,51,507 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 961 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 8.15% including 7.82% were males and 8.50% were females. The population density in the district is 592 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 14,748 out of which 7,681 were males and 7,067 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 11,849 out of which 7,000 were males and 4,849 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.13% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Gujarati and Bhili/Bhilodi with 89.46% and 0.91%.

The economy of the district is dependent on several sectors such as textiles, diamond, sugar industry, agro and food processing, paper, engineering and chemicals industries. The climate of the district is favourable for floriculture as well as horticulture activities. Best Roses Biotech Pvt. The chief agricultural products in the district are rice, wheat, peanut, oil seeds, cotton, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. In the production of chikoo it occupies the highest position in the state and also occupies the highest position in India as an exporter of fruits. The prominent industries in the district are Gufic Biosciences Ltd, Tata Steel Ltd, Mafatlal Industries, Navsari Cotton and Silk Mills, VVF Limited. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent.

The district is an abode of numerous reputed educational institutions. It provides platform for higher education. Navsari Agriculture University in the district offers courses in different areas namely agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and fisheries. Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technical Education and Research, another well known educational institution in the district provides education in the fields like computer science, electrical, electronics, communication and mechanical engineering. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 83.88% including 88.75% are males and 78.83% are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. The Somnath Mahadev Temple, devoted to Lord Mahadev is located at Billimora taluka in the district. Moreover, it is the tallest temple of Lord Shiva in the whole southern part of Gujarat i.e. 108 metres. There is a pious hot spring in the district named as Unai Hot Springs. Pilgrims from the far distance place come to this place to take a dip into this holy hot spring and after that they go to visit the Shri Chintamani Parshvanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Parshvanath who is the 23rd Jain Tirthankara. It is an extra ordinary religious centre for the Jain community. The two other distinguished religious spots in the district are Dargah of Sayed Saadat and Udvada Atash-Behram Fire Temple. Vansda National Park in the district is a perfect destination for nature’s lovers. It is an abode of a great variety of fauna and flora. Nature tourism in the district without Waghai Botanical Garden is incomplete. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Saifee Villa Museum, Dastur Meherji-Rana Library, Gandhi Beach, Eating Sugar Cane, Padamdughari Eco Campsite, etc.
