About Phek District (Nagaland)

Phek district is a district of Nagaland, located its south-eastern part with its administrative headquarters located at Phek town. The district got its name from the word "Phekrekedze" meaning watch tower. In the earlier period, a part of the Kohima district was separated and emerged as a distinct district called Phek district on 21st December, 1973. From the very beginning, it is generally inhabited by the two tribes namely Chakhesangs and Pochurys.

Geographically, the district lies at 25°70' N latitude and 94°46' E longitude. The altitude in the district is 1646 m. In the year 2021, there was a total 78.66% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,026 sq km. and it is bounded by Zunheboto district and Tuensang district on the North, Manipur on the South, Tuensang district on the East and Kohima district on the West. The principal rivers in the district are Tizu, Lanye and Sedzu. Some of the prominent lakes in the district are Shilloi, Chida, Dzudu, etc. The climate of the district remains moderately warm in the summers and fairly cold in the winters. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 803.3 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 5 Rural Development blocks namely Kikruma, Pfutsero, Sekruzu, Phek and Meluri. Moreover, it comprises 14 sub-districts, 2 towns and 117 villages. The administrative language in the district is English.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 1,63,418 including 83,743 are males and 79,675 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 951 (females for every 1000 males). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 10.27% out of which 8.56% were males and 12.13% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Christian with 96.82% of the total population. The population density in the district is 81 (persons per sq. km.). As per 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Chakru/Chokri, Khezha and Pochury with 53.76%, 20.05% and 12.34%. The major schedule tribe population in the district are Naga and Chakhesang with 99.84% and 85.01% of the total population. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 563 out of which 308 were males and 255 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 12 out of which 8 were males and 4 were females.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on agricultural sector. Most of the population in the district are engaged in agricultural activities in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are tea, rubber, paddy, maize, wheat, peas, etc. Farmers of the district also earns some extra income from the horticultural products like apple, pear, plum, peach, orange, lemon, pomegranate, papaya, sweet lime, banana, guava, mango, litchi , etc. But the district is scantily industrialised since it has only a few small scale agro based industries. The place of Phek is blessed with evergreen sub-tropical and temperate coniferous forests. Furthermore, the district is rich in mineral resources as well. Iron Chromium, nickel, cobalt, copper, molybdenum, chromites, magnetite, asbestos, talc, marble are also some of the mineral deposits commonly found in the district.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its most recognised educational institutions are Assam Rifle, Baptist Mission School, Bishop Abraham Memorial School, Holy Care School, Kerehuba, Kiddies Corner, New Life School, Royal Foundation School, Shilloi School, St. Mary School, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 78.05% out of which 83.66% are males and 72.21% are females. The literate population in the district is 1,05,893 including 57,926 are males and 47,967 are females. The illiterate population in the district is 57,525 including 25,817 are males and 31,708 are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Khezhakeno, a legendary village with a number of historical and mythological stories is located in the district. Natives of the district believe that many Naga tribes have their origin in the Khezhakeno and then they migrated to the other parts of the region. According to another popular legend, the village has a stone slab from which helps paddy miraculously multiply when placed on any drying land. Sillio Lake is a beautiful and marvellous water body that shaped as a footprint. The Sillio Lake is popularly known as Latsam among the locals. It is a perfect place for nature’s lovers. Some other notable places of interest in the district are District Museum, Pfutsero, Phek and many more.

Khwetelhi Thopi, an illustrious Indian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Aizawl in the I-League on loan from Rangdajied United of the Shillong Premier League was born in the Phek district.
