About Rajgarh District (Madhya Pradesh)

Rajgarh district, a part of Bhopal division is a district of Madhya Pradesh with its administrative headquarters located at Rajgarh town. The district got its name from its administrative headquarters town Rajgarh. After the formation of Madhya Bharat in May, 1948 Rajgarh district became a part of it. Earlier, the territory of the current district was divided among several states such as the States of Rajgarh, Narsinghgarh, Khilchipur, Dewas (Senior), Dewas (Junior) and Indore. During different periods of time the district was ruled by different rulers. Umat Rajputs and a branch of the great paramara clan declared Rajgarh, as the headquarters of a mediated state of them. At the period of the Sultans of Delhi and Mughal emperors, the place enjoyed a status of Sanad Estate. The present day’s first Shajapur district was formerly known as Duparia, the first capital of the Rajgarh district. After sometime, it was shifted to Dungarpur and then to Ratanpur. In 1640 Mohan Singh, the ruler of the Estate acquired the present side, originally called as Jhanjhanipur from the Bhil Tribe, so as to avoid disturbance created by Mughal armies. At last, in the year 1645 he transferred the headquarters and changed the name of the place i.e. its present name.

Geographically, the district lies at 24°01'N latitude, 76°73'E longitude and 491 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 2.79% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 6,153 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 25th in the state and 175th in India. It is bounded by Rajasthan state on the North, Shajapur district on the South and West, Bhopal district on the East and Sehore district on the South East. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. The actual rainfall in the district was 1372.6 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 7 tehsils namely Rajgarh, Khilchipur, Zirapur, Biaora, Narsinghgarh, Sarangpur and Pachore. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 5 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 7 sub-districts, 13 towns and 1,728 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 15,45,814 out of which 7,90,212 are males and 7,55,602 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 956 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 23.26% including 21.74% were males and 24.9% were females. The population density in the district is 251 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 28,831 out of which 14,782 were males and 14,049 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 10,009 out of which 5,919 were males and 4,090 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.76% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 98.95%.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purpose. The chief agricultural products in the district are rice, wheat, soybean, rapeseed, mustard, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is scantily industrialised but some industries of plastic, pipe, metal, etc are available in it. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Rajgarh as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 17,06,778 lakhs at current price and Rs. 10,23,514 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 15,83,795 lakh at current price and Rs. 9,25,916 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 89,762 at current price and Rs. 52,477 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher educational institutions. Some of its recognised educational institutions are Kendriya Vidyalaya, Govt. Excellence School, Govt. Post Graduation College, Rajeshwar Convent School, Swami Vivekanand Public School, Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School, Deepak Public School, Career Convent Public School, K. K. College of Science & Management, Sarswati Shishu Mandir, Unix Computer College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 61.21% out of which 73.02% are males and 48.95% are females.

Narayan Singh Amlabe, an eminent Indian politician and a member of 15th Lok Sabha from the Rajgarh constituency was born on 1st June, 1951 at Amlabe village in the Rajgarh district. He is a vital member of various committees such as member of the Committee on Agriculture, member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. He is a member of the Indian National Congress.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures numerous travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Jalpamata Temple, an amazing temple located on the high hill at a distance of 4 km. from Rajgarh is covered with a dense forest, full of different varieties of plant. From the top of the temple, its visitors can have a mesmerising view of the town. Khoiry Mahadev Temple, a wonderful temple of Lord Mahadev is situated 1 km. away from Rajgarh. Pilgrims from far off places comes o this temple to offer their prayers. Dargah Shareif and other buildings were constructed by the Mutawalli of Dargah Shri Syed after the death of Baba Sahib. People of all religion from across the India come to this place for their spiritual gain. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Bada Mahal, Kishangarh Kothi, Bateri Mata Mandir and many more historical monuments.
